Gunman have taken a number of hostages after storming a restaurant popular with foreigners in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, security services say.

Two police officers were killed and a number of others were injured in a gun battle after the attack on the restaurant, the Holey Artisan Bakery, in the diplomatic Gulshan district.

As many as nine attackers - believed to be armed with assault rifles and grenades - stormed the restaurant on Friday evening.

The so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, as Bangladeshi security services quickly sealed off the area. IS said more than 20 people had been killed - but this has not been confirmed.

As the security forces were trying to negotiate the hostages' release, a bomb disposal unit was seen being prepared to be deployed.
