How The World Is Pressurizing Pakistan After Uri Attack, Diplomatic Gains For India

Pakistan is bearing the harsh consequences of Sunday’s deadly attack on Uri by Pakistani militant outfits that left 18 Indian soldiers dead.

According to Indian Army, The terrorists who carried out the attacks had Pakistani markings on their arms and ammunitions. Initial reports indicate that the slain terrorists belonged to Jaish-e-Mohammad.

The attack that stirred India from its ground prompted the Indian government to take a decision of diplomatically isolating Pakistan at every international grouping.

Russia Calls Off Military Exercise
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif allegiance to US, UK, France, Russia and China urging them to put pressure on India over Kashmir has backfired miserably after Sunday’s attack. While, the US, UK and France have rejected Pakistan’s claims, Russia has decided to go a step ahead and called off the joint military exercises with Pakistan in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Pakistan and Russia were scheduled to conduct the ‘Druzhba-2016’ tactical exercises from September 24 to October 7 in Rattu and Cherat.

This step is being regarded as a significant diplomatic gain for India as it had earlier urged Russia to reconsider its decision to hold the joint military drills Pakistan.

Even Bangladesh High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali has pledged its support to India invoking the spirit of 1971 war against Pakistan.

Bill to designate Pakistan as Terrorist State
While the above-stated decision is being seen as a condemnation of the Uri attack, another matter has caused major embarrassment to Pakistan as two American lawmakers have introduced a Bill in the US Congress to declare Pakistan, a state sponsor of terrorism. The bill has been introduced just before the much hyped Nawaz Sharif’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly where he is supposed to rake up the Kashmir issue.

The legislation called H.R (House of Representative) 6069 or the Pakistani State Sponsor of Terrorism Designation Act, urges the US government to formally deal with the issue within four months.

The bill was moved by Congressman Ted Poe from Texas, who is the Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Terrorism, and Congressman Dana Rohrabacher of California, who is a strong votary of the Baloch cause.

The President will have to come up with a report clarifying whether Pakistan has aided international terrorism or not within 90 days, a month later, the Secretary of State is expected to issue a follow-up report on either a determination that Pakistan is state sponsor of terrorism or a comprehensive justification on why Pakistan does not meet the legal criteria for the post.

”Not only is Pakistan an untrustworthy ally, Islamabad has also aided and abetted enemies of the United States for years. From harbouring Osama bin Laden to its cozy relationship with the Haqqani network , there is more than enough evidence to determine whose side Pakistan is on in the War on Terror. And it’s not America’s,” Poe said in a statement on Tuesday announcing the bill.

It is the first time in many years that there are talks of formally designating Pakistan as a terrorist state. Such a statement was last discussed in 1993 after the Mumbai serial blasts through Dawood Ibrahim. The attack killed 259 people and was a precursor to attacks in New York, London, and Madrid.

Even Indian-Americans continued to rally behind the call for designating Pakistan, a state sponsor of terrorism.

Hope for not becoming a law
Since Congress has lesser time to consider the Bill, things can certainly work in favour of Pakistan. For a Bill to become law, it has to pass through various levels. Finally, it might not receive President Obama’s assent as he is at the end of his terms.

Currently, the US has three nations on its list of state sponsors of terrorism including Iran, Syria and Sudan.
