VIJAYAWADA, SEPT. 22:

Some of the coastal districts as well as Rayalaseema districts in Andhra Pradesh experienced heavy rainfall on Thursday due to the depression in the Bay of Bengal, resulting in inundation of several low-lying areas and disruption of road traffic as well as rail traffic in several areas.

Guntur was the worst-affected, with two deaths being reported from the district. Several were reported missing, carried off by the swollen streams and rivulets. A bus of AP State Road Transport Corporation with 40 passengers on borad was trapped in a swollen stream (Ootukuru) in Krosur mandal of the district. The police and the local people rescued the stranded passengers with great difficulty. Two helicopters were summoned from the Navy to rescue people in the district.

East Godavari district also experienced heavy and widespread rains, resulting in breaches to tanks and heavy flooding in many areas. Standing paddy crop and other crops were inundated in many villages in the vicinity of Rajahmundry and roads were flooded.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said here that all steps would be taken to protect people and minimise the loss of life and he urged the public to co-operate with the officials in the low-lying areas. Relief measures would be taken immediately. He said that Guntur, East Godavari and Kurnool received heavy rainfall.

Krishna floodwaters were let out at the Prakasam barrage here and at Pulichintala reservoir in Guntur district and also the Godavari waters at Dowlaiswaram barrage near Rajahmundry. The authorities alerted the downstream villages to vacate the low-lying areas.

Rainwater, on reaching the Earth, gets channeled into one of two water systems: groundwater or sewage.
The water in the sewage systems, trapped by street gutters, runs into the man-made sewage systems.
Sometimes it is “reclaimed” — purified and sterilized — for use as water in a home or business.
Other times it is channeled into a nearby river or ocean.
From there it begins the cycle again: it evaporates from the ocean into the atmosphere, condenses into clouds,
condenses even more to form rain where it falls back to the earth.

Rainwater that becomes groundwater — water that is stored and moved through the ground by means of the water table
(an underground region of highly-saturated earth that stores water) — moves into ponds and streams and eventually rivers
and oceans where it evaporates and becomes part of the atmosphere. Just like water from man-made sewage systems, it begins the cycle all over again.

And that is where the water goes after it rains.
