kranthi111983 Posted October 13, 2016 Report Posted October 13, 2016 Ranchi, Oct. 9: A retired army doctor apparently stabbed himself after injecting lethal doses of anaesthesia to his wife, son, niece-in-law and two granddaughters in an upscale high-rise in Kokar, the gruesome discovery of the five bodies and the doctor, still alive in a pool of blood, triggering hysteria in the area this afternoon on Ashtami. The casualties were family members of Noida-based Colonel Dr Sukanto Sarkar (63), who had all reached Ranchi on October 6, less for a Durga Puja family reunion and more to seek legal advice for a family problem. Apparently, Col Dr Sarkar's daughter-in-law Madhumita, 29, was "creating havoc" in the family with her insinuations and allegations. Advertisement: Replay Ad Ads by ZINC The Noida visitors were put up by Col Dr Sarkar's nephew Dr Subrato Choudhuri, a noted Ranchi dentist, at the latter's empty flat in Riviresa apartments, Kokar. But, around 1.15pm today, when his repeated calls went unheeded, a worried Dr Choudhuri, who stays in Tharpakhna, came to his Kokar flat (no. 1002, on the 10th floor) to find five bodies, a barely alive Col Dr Sarkar and four suicide notes in English, stating they could not tolerate the "emotional torture" inflicted by Madhumita and preferred death to it. In what looked like in a bizarre family suicide pact, Col Dr Sarkar had apparently injected anaesthesia to his wife Anjana Sarkar (62), son Sameer Sarkar (35), also an IT professional in Noida, niece-in-law Moumita Sarkar (27) and his two granddaughters, Sameer's daughter Samita (7) and Moumita's daughter Sumita (5). Then, it appears Col Dr Sarkar stabbed himself brutally, inflicting deep wounds on his chest and throat. But, by a quirk of fate, he is alive and fighting for his life at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi. Though unconfirmed, the four suicide notes appear to be written by Col Dr Sarkar, Anjana, Sameer and Moumita. City SP Kishore Kaushal, who said prima facie the matter appeared to be suicide, added that the four suicide notes apart, two blood-stained knives, one syringe and an ampoule of medicine had been recovered from the spot. "The suicide notes, written on four small square pieces of paper by four different persons suggested they were very disturbed by Sameer's wife Madhumita and preferred death to get rid of her," he said, but added that the nature of Madhurima's allegations could not be confirmed so far. "A thorough probe is on," the city SP said. Madhumita had not accompanied her husband, daughter and other in-laws to Ranchi and possibly stayed back at Noida. Unconfirmed sources within the Choudhuri-Sarkar families suggested Madhumita had, from time to time, raised questions on the character of her husband and father-in-law besides alleging dowry demands. Madhumita had also been apparently getting support from another Noida-based woman in this matter, relatives in Ranchi have said without coming on record. Though the family suicide pact hints at a serious matter, nothing conclusive can be said right now, police have said. Contacted, a completely shocked and baffled Dr Choudhuri confirmed his maternal uncle Col Dr Sarkar was seriously troubled by Madhumita, but had no idea things would go so far. They had filed a police diary yesterday with Lower Bazar thana anticipating trouble from Madhumita and discussed the matter with Srijit Choudhuri, a Ranchi-based well-known advocate and a part of the extended family, the dentist added. "I last met my mama around 9pm yesterday. This morning, when I gave a call at 8am, I did not get any response. I took it easy. I called again around noon. Then, when I did not get any response, I drove to Riviresa at 1.15pm. When pressing the doorbell many times evoked no response, I opened the flat with my duplicate key to make the gruesome discovery," Dr Choudhuri said. He added Moumita's husband, Parthib, Col Dr Sarkar's nephew and a banker in Bhopal, had also reached Ranchi last night. But Col Dr Sarkar had requested Dr Choudhuri to keep Parthib at the Tharpakhna home and not the Riviresa apartments, suggesting the young man was not part of the family suicide pact. Quote
