After 6 years of h1 employer need to prove that there is no local equivalent to your skills to perform the job to get extensions thereafter. 

Employment based GCs will be given for 5 years initially and then a 10 year renewal need to be applied. After the first 3 years of second GC they "might" be eligible for naturalization (not guaranteed). If they join the armed forces in the positions required for DoD they can be eligible for naturalization after the first 5yrs GC.
