BUDDY Posted November 21, 2016 Report Posted November 21, 2016 massive blow to #humanitarians PM Modi announced ban on big notes on November 8th. Dainik Jagran took stock of the situation and conducted a survey to understand people’s views about his big move. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to ban the big currency notes to curb black money has created chaos across the country. Long queues of people waiting to change the notes have been witnessed on the roads, political leaders have been marching on the streets, and opposition parties have termed this decision as the state of ‘Financial Emergency’ in the country. The condition of urban India is getting better with every passing day; however, the rural part of the country is still struggling to get their share of money. Many believe that this condition will get better with time. But the opposition parties are still denouncing the government’s move and demanding the roll back of the demonetisation policy although their protest is lacking people’s support. According to the latest survey conducted by Dainik Jagran along with survey agency Marketing and Development Research Associate (MDRA), 85 per cent of the common people are with Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi. Unaware of the mood of the people, political parties are attacking the government both inside and outside the Parliament. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and BSP chief Mayawati are aware of the fact that the people of the country have rejected their demand. The survey was conducted in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Vijaywada, and nearby villages, where the team came in contact with 825 people belonging to different social categories. Most of the 825 people were in the age group of 18-25 years. During last two days, the Indian politics has revolved around the demonetisation issue. The Parliament was adjourned because of the same reason. Dainik Jagran conducted the survey on 17th and 18th November, when the whole nation was talking about the demonetisation scheme. People were asked direct questions and the answers might increase the worry of the opposition parties. The MDRA team tried to gauge the mood of the people in the metros, non-metros, and the nearby places. Straight questions were put and 85 per cent of the people supported PM Modi for the initiative. Seven questions were asked, which included control over black money, poverty eradication, price cut etc. People were also asked whether they support the initiative despite the hardships they are facing outside the ATMs and banks. The survey also tried to understand the political ramifications of this decision. Interestingly, it was observed that there were no doubts in the peoples’ minds as they supported PM Modi wholeheartedly. With the outcome of the survey, it was quite clear that the people were not in any dilemma, rather very clear in their approach with regards to the government’s initiatives. Keeping the illiterates and farmers aside, there were 0.4 to 6-7 per cent of people who failed to answer the questions. Another interesting fact that came to the fore was that as discussion progressed, the number of PM’s supporters increased. For example, the first question that was asked was whether the government has taken the right step by banning big currency notes? 84.8 people cast their votes. Soon, they were asked about price rise, black money, and fake currency notes, and related issues, then the team posed the question whether they support the government’s scheme despite the hardships they are facing? Surprisingly, 37 people, who were opposing the government’s move, changed their stance in the favour of the government, taking the number from 84.8 percent to 86.1 per cent, which meant an increase of 1.5 in the vote share. According to the director (MDRA), Abhishek Agarwal, out of 825 people who participate in the survey, 694 people were asked face-to-face questions whereas 131 were interviewed over the phone.
