I suggest to try LendingClub instead of Stocks (if you are in US) and if the amount you mentioned is in dollars.

LendingClub - is a website which gives you an opportunity to lend money as personal loan to others. On average you can get around 8% to 10% interest on your investment. You will lend money based on their credit history. This is not good for large amount of investment.

You don't have to lend all your money to one person. You can distribute it to many borrowers. 

Trusting one person might be wrong but by above business model LendingClub makes it a bit trustworthy.
