Video Shows Andhra Journalist Attacked, Crowd Watched, Nobody Helped

 A journalist in Andhra Pradesh has been hospitalised and is fighting for his life after the brother of a lawmaker beat him up in the town of Chirala; the attack was filmed as a crowd watched.  

Amanchi Krishna Mohan is a lawmaker from the ruling Telugu Desam Party or TDP. M Nagarjuna Reddy, a senior journalist, had recently reported that the lawmaker and his brother took loans under a special scheme for financially weak people and refused to repay them. Mr Krishna Mohan has rubbished the claims and said the charges made by the journalist are baseless.

The New Indian Express reports that the lawmaker's brother and a group of others then caught the journalist in the heart of town and beat him with sticks. "The victim cried for help even as passersby watched helplessly," the paper reported.

The video went viral today, but so far, nobody has been arrested, said news agency IANS.

 

Mr Reddy was knocked off his two-wheeler when he was on his way to a shop with his son. The law-maker's brother and  others then  chased him on the street before hitting him over and over with sticks.

 

The reporter was later moved to hospital.

The MLA's brother, Amanchi Swamulu, has accused the reporter of violating the strict SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which aims at punishing any crime that targets traditionally weaker castes. A police case against the reporter has been filed, said IANS, which accuses Mr Reddy of making casteist remarks against the legislator's brother.

The incident occurred on Sunday but came to light on Monday after the visuals of the attack went viral over social media. The journalist, who works for a Telugu newspaper, was knocked down from his two-wheeler when he was on his way to a shop with his son. Swamulu and others chased him on the streets and attacked him with sticks. People watched helplessly and nobody came to the victim’s help. The journalist, who suffered bleeding injuries, was later taken to a hospital. The police registered a case against Swamulu and others but no arrests have been made. But on a complaint by the MLA’s brother, the police booked the journalist under SC ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The complainant alleged that Nagarjuna Reddy abused him citing his caste. The journalist said Krishna Mohan was angry after he recently wrote a story in a newspaper about his alleged corruption. The journalist wrote that Krishna Mohan and his brother had borrowed loans from banks in the name of eligible candidates belonging to economically backward sections. When the loans were not repaid, the banks reportedly approached the people under whose names the loans were taken. Krishna Mohan, belonging to ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP), represents Chirala constituency. Nagarjuna Reddy said four attempts on his life were made during the last 10 years as he had been fearlessly raising his voice against the corruption and repression let loose by the MLA

post the proof if you have any. Hard to believe any news paper will allow that to publish it for 2 years.

Even if that is true, Do you think beating people on roads is justice ?
