Microosft to remove 5000 employees

NEW YORK – Wall Street is down sharply as disappointing results at Microsoft Corp. and increasing concerns about the nation's banks are weighing on investors.

Microsoft surprised the market by reporting its fiscal second-quarter earnings early. The software giant is reporting an 11 percent drop in profits and is saying it will slash 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months.

Investors are also worried the government will need to spend more money to stabilize the banking system.

Major indexes are off more than 3 percent in their third straight day of volatile trading. The Dow Jones industrial average is down nearly 250 points, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 25 at 814, and the Nasdaq composite idnex is down 55 at 1,451.
