Yes my sister told me that most of the doctors label our kids as autistic and then they start talking normally between 4 to 5..

I am a psychiatrist and my son is 2 y n 4 months old. He speaks small sentences. I found this topic interesting. The best explanation, I can give is because we speak telugu at home and everyone speaks English outside. Most of the things they see outside are different from the things they see at home. That creates a lot of confusion to them. We want our kids to know everything about Indian culture, while living here. I spend at least 1-2 hours with my son and teach him the words in both languages. Now he knows 1-20 numbers in telugu and English. He can tell body parts like face, nose, etc in both languages. He understands our instructions in telugu and at the same time, I did not get any remarks from his day care with his speech or communication. Me and my wife put the extra effort everyday to avoid the confusion. For 2 years age, he speaks (though not much but definitely remarkable- even he hums most of the telugu songs and English rhymes) and understands both languages. I think, the problem is with us, not with kids. We all are busy with work and will be tired by the end of the day but if you can put that small extra effort, that makes the things better.

With regard to labeling them with Autism, I totally agree with your sister. Lot of American doctors like to label kids with autism. I witnessed that so many times in my practice. I would says it's around 20-30%, based on my little experience in psychiatry.

Spend time with kids, they learn easily.

Great Post.. All the Indian parents should be aware of this.. Now I am seeing my sister and she is very worried.. The doctors are saying that by 3 the kids should talk fluently and my nephew only says amma and a couple of other words.. He is very social but he doesn't to point to things and ask for them. Instead he simply drags people to the things he wants.. She started a new job when my nephew turned one and my brother in law is very busy.. So my nephew was left with a nanny the whole time.. With a little bit of extra effort she could have easily avoided this headache.. She is now quitting her job now and taking her son to India..

why should I have to lie here? I am just an observer in this forum since 2008 and enjoy the postings and sometimes responded when people talk about USMLE exams, or anything related to my field etc

generally, boys language skills are a bit delayed when compared to girls. They need to spend sometime with him and language delay does not mean that the  kid is going to suffer in future. That's just one of the mile stones and eventually they will get it (If the rest of the things are ok with him, I mean no birth complications, infections at early age, etc)

Doctors scare the parents here.. If the kids don't talk by 2 they try to label it as autism..
