BRIDGEPORT -- A former University of Bridgeport student, who was working as a store clerk at Norman's Grocery and Deli, was killed last night during an apparent robbery at the store.

A UB official said the victim was Arun K. Narote, who had been a student there, but transferred to another university in September 2009. While at UB, the official said, Narote had been in the university's graduate mechanical engineering program.

Narote, who apparently was shot at least once in the head, becomes the city's 13th homicide victim this year, surpassing last year's 12 homicides.

"He was cool ---- nobody had any problems with him," said Wilkins Ramos about Narote. Ramos lives in an apartment above the American/Spanish grocery store at the corner of Maplewood Avenue and Norman Street. Ramos said he wasn't home Monday night when the incident happened.

Another neighborhood resident, who didn't want to be identified, said that the victim "was a nice guy, and really nice guy."

Neighbors said that the shooting took place sometime late Monday and that police remained at the scene until about 3 a.m. collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.

It's not known if a suspect has been apprehended.

By daybreak Tuesday, the store was shuttered, and there was no sign of activity inside.

State records indicate that the bodega is owned by Usman Malik and Awais Malik, who were granted a beer permit in December, 2007 by the state Dept. of Liquor Control.

The neighborhood, two blocks west of Park Avenue and between North and Fairfield avenues, has a mix of Vietnamese, Korean, Hispanic black and white  residents
