greensboro Posted June 10, 2017 Report Posted June 10, 2017 Grassley's H-1B reform push By TED HESSON 06/09/2017 10:00 AM EDT With help from Marianne LeVine, Ian Kullgren and Mel Leonor GRASSLEY’S H-1B REFORM PUSH: “The Trump administration is feeling pressure from Capitol Hill to follow through on its promise to reform a temporary visa program for specialized workers,” writes POLITICO’s Ted Hesson. “Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) met with Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta Thursday morning to discuss the H-1B program, which provides 85,000 visas each year to foreign guest workers in sectors such as technology and engineering.” “Grassley has long-advocated tougher enforcement, and he’s working with the White House to see what administrative corrective can be taken and also to drum up support for an H-1B reform bill he’s co-sponsored with Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.),” Hesson reports. “We are hoping to work with them and get something done,” Grassley said in an interview. “From a substance standpoint, they’re short on enforcement. I’m willing to make some accommodations on the other end of making availability [of visas].” Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), has also discussed H-1Bs with the White House, and is expected to roll out a version of his “I-Squared” bill in coming weeks. The bill, if in step with past versions, would dramatically expand the number of new H-1B visas available each year from a general pool of 65,000 to 115,000, with the possibility to rise to 195,000 in strong economic years. A 20,000-visa cap on applicants with a master’s degree or higher would be lifted entirely. Quote
