‘Major players see exciting opportunities in the city’

The focus on attracting big ticket projects to Visakhapatnam is expected to bear fruit with several IT majors evincing interest in setting up their campuses in the city.

Highly-placed sources told The Hindu that during a chat with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu recently, the top brass of Infosys hinted at the possibility of establishing a 23,000-seater campus in the city provided the government extended all the required support.

When contacted, AP Economic Development Board CEO J. Krishna Kishore said road shows and investor meets held in India and abroad evoked a good response from global companies. He, however, did not name any firm that had committed any major investment in the near future.

Oracle and Google had already made enquiries with the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation and Software Technology Parks of India to know about facilities being available in the city to open their development centres. Tech Mahindra has been allotted 10 acres at Rushikonda for developing its second campus in the city. Wipro, which has its campus in the city, is awaiting permissions to develop it as a Special Economic Zone.

MoUs signed

As part of promoting Visakhapatnam as a Fintech valley, MoUs have already been signed with Visa and Thomson Reuters and in-principle understanding has been reached with Masters to open their office in the city. Paytm has already started its operations at Fintech Tower at Rushikonda.

International Institute of Digital Technologies run by the AP Electronics and IT Agency (APEITA), an autonomous society floated by the government to promote IT and electronics, will start its campus in the city soon with a PG programme in artificial intelligence and machine learning to create industry-ready professionals.

The Chief Minister, during one of his visits to the city, had announced that they were in talks with Microsoft for opening its development centre. There is buzz in IT circles that it could come up either in Visakhapatnam or Amaravati if everything goes well.
