strong democracy doesn't mean it can't happen.

strong democratic institutions can stop them from happening, but they will weaken it slowly.

civil war is unlikely. But police state is much more likely. In many ways US is already a heavily policed, and has the highest number of prisoners in the world.

Naah it's more of a constitutional republic dude, where electoral college decides who gets to sit in the White house. 

Not a direct democracy by any means, as much as people want to feel about it that way.
