Not Pawanism but Rowdyism? questions social media, Pawan Kalyan fans continue to threaten Mahesh Kathi

Telugu hero turned politician, Pawan Kalyan who is also brother of former Central Minister and popular actor Chiranjeevi has a huge fan base in Telugu States. His fans worship him no less than a god and regard their hero as a great human being. Pawan Kalyan also has got a great image as a good human being in his own circles. He has floated a political party called ‘Janasena’only to support Telugu Desam party and BJP, who is ruling in Andhra Pradesh state.

Pawan has co-authored a book called ‘ISM’ and launched it during his party launch in 2014. The beginning of the book reads “Noble things are never easy nor they are common” and is dedicated to all those who strives hard for the sake of fair dealing. The book consists of four parts talking about various issues whose intentions appear to be sane. In particular, the third chapter accuse almost all the existing political parties being criminal in nature and thus justifying the emergence of a new leadership.

In the third chapter, “Introduction: the case for an ideological basis”, authors said that the country has been confined to the hands of vigorous people with a strong criminal mentality. "The obscurity has been pushing good quality aside, thereby paving a way for the impotent, unethical, anti-social and spiritual forces to attain power (…) the present situation is the dais for criminal, hopeless and unanswerable politics.”

But none of those claims or accusing in the book like ‘anti-social, unethical, criminal mentality’ seems to be applicable to Pawan Kalyan fans who are sending grave threats to Mahesh Kathi, a film critic based in Hyderabad. Mahesh is a big boss (telugu) participant who has become popular after the show.

Controversy has sparked after Mahesh made comments on Pawan’s choice of films and political allies. In an interview to a youtube channel, Mahesh said that in his view, Pawan is not a great actor, but a star. In the two hours long interview, he criticized the actor-turned-politician for being active only on Twitter and not doing anything constructively in reality. Mahesh also passed comments on other leaders and artists in the same interviews, and he has been criticising since years now.

This is not the first time Pawan fans have threatened Mahesh Kathi. He received several abusing and threatening calls and messages when he reviewed Pawan’s last release ‘Katama Rayudu’ which did not also do well at the box office.

Talking to Critic Brain, Mahesh recalled that Pawan has gone to Tirupathi last year when his fan Vinod Royal was reportedly murdered by another Telugu star’s (Jr. NTR) fan and consoled his mother. ‘Is he (Pawan Kalyan) waiting for his fans to kill me? Will he come to rescue my dead body?’ said Kathi.

An angry Mahesh wrote on his facebook about the threatening calls and messages and it soon picked up a discussion. After the issue picked up a social media raw, Mahesh went live on a popular Telugu channel to talk directly with the Pawan fans. Not to any surprise, Pawan and Chiranjeevi fans called the live show to pass the same threats. Nanda Kishore, president of Chiranjeevi Fans association warned Mahesh Kathi of dire consequences.

“I received 8 thousand calls in two days, and Pawan fans have shared my phone number on Watsapp Groups and other social platforms. A caller threatened me saying that my kids will not identify my dead body after they kill me.” Said Mahesh. In a video he posted on his facebook today, we can see flooded calls on his mobile and abusive messages on his watsapp.

Mahesh said that he would expect Pawan to refrain his fans from threatening me or at least disown his fans that make such threatens like Tamil hero Ajit did in the past in reaction to the fan wars. When asked if there is any support from the film industry, he said ‘no one but my mentor Tammareddy Bharadwaj is by my side from the industry.’ ‘All including most of the media fear these established hero families’ added the critic.

This is not the first time Pawan cornered someone, even Allu Arjun wasn't spared for his 'Cheppanu Brother' comment against Pawan. Chiranjeevi’s brother Nagababu also had become serious on Pawan fans in the past.

Whatever the fans calls it, their madness or heroic worship, what Pawan Fans are doing on the name of fans is highly unappreciated and unwarranted. Which world we are living in? Any person who criticises a hero or leader should face such threats? Why do we have police and courts? If this is how individual safety is put at risk on whatever grounds, we are certainly running after darkness as rightly said by Pawan in his book ‘Ism’.

Would Pawan endorse his fans? Or he is already doing so by being silent? Well, we have to wait and watch if at all Pawan or his friends respond on this issue at all. Meanwhile, the rowdiesm of self proclaimed Pawan fans has also extended to the supporters of Mahesh Kathi. Several social media activists have reported that they are receiving messages on their facebook from these ‘fans’ abusing and asking to delete the comments.
