Kool_SRG Posted September 2, 2017 Report Posted September 2, 2017 Hyderabad: The towering Khairatabad Ganesh idol is likely to go eco-friendly from next year, with plans afoot to have the idol made from clay. The Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav Samithi is reportedly making necessary arrangements for this major transformation. The aim is to promote eco-friendly celebrations and installation of clay idols across the city as part of the Vinayaka Chavithi festivities. The Khairatabad Ganesh idol is popular across the State and in neighbouring States, including Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The existing idol is nearly 60-foot tall and a team of special artisans led by chief artisan Rajendran from Coimbatore are making the gigantic idol since many years. Welcoming the Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav Samithi’s decision to install a clay idol, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan appealed to all the youth associations to follow suit and promote eco-friendly celebrations in the city. It is also learned that Governor ESL Narasimhan also had appealed to the Utsav Samithi to install a clay idol next year. The State government is promoting eco-friendly celebrations and towards this initiative, authorities said over two lakh clay idols were distributed to households in the city this year. The installation of the Khairatabad Ganesh was commenced by S Shankeriah in 1954 at Khairatabad, and over the years, the height of the idol gradually went up to 60 feet. Quote
