After doing 35 years of government service, any general citizen would embark on vacations, spend time with grandchildren etc. and enjoy the retirement. 67-year-old Gangadhara Tilak Katnam however is no common man, he is a ‘Man on a Mission’, the mission to make Hyderabad roads safe for people. Since 2011, he has been travelling the city and filling every pothole he spots. He has filled about 1,200 potholes so far.

Born in West Godavari district of AP, Gangadhara Tilak Katnam retired in 2008 after working as senior section engineer in the Southern Railways for 35 years. Later, he took up a job as a consultant in a software agency in Hyderabad. The idea to make Hyderabad roads pothole-free occurred to him when he witnessed a couple of road accidents.

At each accident, he kept thinking that the accident could have been avoided if the pothole was fixed by the govt. or someone else. Instead of complaining and crying for help, he then decided to take the initiative. From then on, he has embarked on a strenuous mission. He spent his pension money and also quit his job with the software firm to accomplish his mission. He doesn’t accept any donations and does everything from his own pocket.

This naturally upset his wife, who didn’t want to see him work in the hot Sun. When she asked her son, who lives in the US to talk some sense into his father, the son instead understood his father’s great ambition and helped him by creating a social media page for Tilak’s cause with the name, ‘Shramadaan’.

The GHMC initially tried to dissuade Tilak with an assurance that they would fix the roads. When Tilak refused, the GHMC joined hands with him, and has started providing him with resources and materials to fill potholes.

Tilak says that a serious change is required in the mindset of people with their attitude towards their surroundings.
