A newborn baby girl was rescued from a rubbish skip covered in ants after being abandoned by her parents

She is now being cared for in hospital after being found by a tea stall owner in the Indian city of Bhopal.

Dheeraj Rathore discovered her in a bin, swarming with ants, in the early hours of Saturday.

He said: "I was passing through the bin when I heard the cries of a baby.

"I was was shocked to see an infant's head sticking out of a red polybag in a garbage vat among the bushes.

Doctors said the tot weighed only 3.5lbs when she was admitted

She was left with injuries to her legs and back following the heartbreaking ordeal

"Ants were all over her head and body.”

Rathore and his two friends cleared the insects from the infant's body, wrapped her in a cloth and took her to a nearby hospital where her condition was described as critical.

Doctors said the tot weighed only 3.5lbs when she was admitted.

One medic said: "When she was brought to the hospital, she had multiple injury marks on her body.”

Police confirmed they are hunting for the baby’s parents.
