Your question is why princely states joined Indian Union? Why were they ready to give up their Power and comforts that come along??

Ans: Because Princely states were not independent either  before 1947.  Public did not have any voice before 1947 in India. These princely states were dictated by British Governors, who were reporting to Viceroy of British India, who was reporting to the Her Majesty, the Queen Victoria, the Great. Viceroy was sitting in Calcutta till 1905 and then he was shifted to New Delhi due to agitation problems in Bengal Province.  These princely states were without any Army powers except for Nizams Razakars led by Qasim Razvi. Except that no princely prince had got even access to Gun powder. So when Sardar vallabh bhai patel took over the reins as Home Minister, he took over the Central powers. He then used that powers to negotiate with one side benefit.

India was divided before Mughal rule and even further divided with Mughal rule and its British who unified the spread over states of India.They formed the Central Union Govt well before 1947.
