Chris Karnes said he was on the third or fourth car on the train when he felt "a little bit of a jolt." "Then at a certain point, we could hear a crumpling of the train and we were catapulted into the seats in front of us," he said. After the train went down the embankment, Karnes said he and other passengers climbed out of their car so they could find help for an injured passenger. Karnes, a member of the Pierce Transit Community Transportation Advisory Group, said the train was going at least 70 mph and passing vehicles on the freeway. Quote

This is a large go-team because it is considered a “major incident” by the agency. Within that group, the teams will each be focused on three different areas. One team will be focused on human performance, another team will look at the mechanics of the train and another team on the rails and the signals, according to this same source. Quote

"Let me begin by expressing our deepest sympathies and most heartfelt prayers for the victims of the train derailment in Washington state," Trump said. The President again used the event to push his own infrastructure agenda. "We are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local authorities. It is all the more reason why we must start immediately fixing the infrastructure of the United States," he said. In his first tweet after the deadly train crash, Trump didn't mention victims and first responders. Instead, he tweeted that it showed why his administration's infrastructure plan is needed. This means that state agencies and departments will be able to tap into state resources in order to "do everything reasonably possible to assist affected political subdivisions in an effort to respond to and recover from the incidents," according to the governor's proclamation.
