If Trump ends H1B visas, what will happen to existing visa holders? (Lifted from Quora)

I read in a news report that there are about 1 million H1B holders waiting in green card line. Even if you cut that in half, conservatively, there are still 500,000 skilled workers in the US in these lines. Also, every year 85,000 new H1B holders start working in the USA (not including all the cap-exempt H1B holders).

Firstly, H1B is a law, not an executive order so Trump can’t end it unilaterally. If Trump+congress ends new H1B, it will have a small impact on the US economy, but not too much.

The real whammy is if he cancels ALL H1Bs issued, including the H1B extensions to people waiting in GC line. These million or so people have bought expensive homes, pay taxes, have kids born and raised in USA.

  1. If employers are willing to spend thousands of $$ on these employees anyway rather than hire US citizens, they will probably find it cheaper to move them overseas and pay them even less, rather than hire those many US citizens.
  2. All the taxes, revenue and business that was getting created by having those million or so people here will disappear.
  3. Housing market will be badly hit as these people rush to sell their houses.
  4. No foreign graduates will come to the US to study STEM, since they now know for sure there is no point in paying for the degree if they cannot work in the US anymore. Which means all the money that the university was getting from foreign students stops. Already the university system is strained from lack of government support….
  5. US dominance in the tech sector might fade away.
  6. Other countries who need STEM graduates will happily open their doors (e.g. Canada, EU, China, India)
  7. Trump will make all other countries great again!

But again, this is all speculation based on drastic action that might not happen. Lets hope the Congress knows the economic implications of “self-deporting” a million or so skilled people.
