Krishna Kumari passes away

Yesteryear's heroine Krishna Kumari breathed her last due to health at her residence in Bangaluru. She was 85 and is survived by a daughter.

 

The actress was diagnosed with cancer and had been undergoing chemotherapy. Known for her work in Telugu, Krishna Kumari was one of the busiest actors in the 60s. She worked with several legends such as NT Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Krishnam Raju, Dr Rajkumar, Sivaji Ganesan, Kanta Rao and Jaggayya.

 

Krishna Kumari was born in Naihati, West Bengal on March 6, 1933. She was sister of yesteryears actress Sowkar Janaki. She made her acting debut with Telugu movie “Navvithe Navaratnalu” in 1951. While she acted in a string of Tamil movies such as Thirumbi Paar (1953), Manithan (1953), Azhagi (1953), Pudhuyugam (1954), Viduthalai (1954) and Thuli Visham (1954), she later chose to focus on Telugu cinema. Krishna Kumari acted in 150 Telugu films and some 30 Tamil and Kannada films. Her repertoire won her fans across Indian States and President's Award.

 

Krishna Kumari married Ajay Mohan Khaitan, former editor of Indian Express and founder of Screen Magazine. They have a daughter Dipika. Post marriage, she quit acting and moved to Bengaluru with her daughter and son-in-law Vikram and grandson Pavan. She was known for her memorable performances with NTR, Akkineni Nageswara Rao in Telugu and with Dr Rajkumar in Kannada. Some of her films in Telugu are still considered to be classics such as “Bharya Bhartalu” (1961), “Vagdanam” (1961), “Kulagothralu” (1962), “Gudi Gantalu” (1964). Krishna Kumari was also famous for her mythological portrayals with Kanta Rao. It is said the first dance recital of late chief minister and actor J Jayalalithaa was hosted at Krishna Kumari’s residence.

 

The sudden death of Krishna Kumari has shocked and saddened many filmgoers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Many took to Twitter to express their grief and offered condolences to her family.
