If your parents can learn how to use Watsapp and To watch movies on Netflix, why can't you learn R, Python or any tools , skills for that matter. There is no reason why you can’t switch your field of work. If you want to be a data scientist ,  BE! If you want to do sales , after doing engineering for years , DO! Why so many question on what does it take to do something? Answer is , stop being dependent ! You career is in your hand , not your boss, company or the recruiting agency. Remember , learning is a natural process, it even happens without conscious efforts .
