Kool_SRG Posted February 4, 2018 Report Posted February 4, 2018 However, party leaders said TDP president and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has asked his MPs to step up the pressure on the Centre by “disrupting Parliament”, even at the risk of being suspended or thrown out of the House. Chandrababu Naidu is peeved with BJP and claimed that very meagre allocations to the state were made in the Union budget. After the tough posturing over the last two days, sparking speculation that it may leave the ruling National Democratic Alliance at the Centre, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Sunday decided to continue its alliance with the BJP. However, party leaders said TDP president and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has asked his MPs to step up the pressure on the Centre by “disrupting Parliament”, even at the risk of being suspended or thrown out of the House. Following bifurcation of the state in 2014, TDP leaders have often alleged step-motherly treatment by the Centre in allocation of funds and incentives. While ties between the TDP and BJP deteriorated over the last three years, on issues like special category status for Andhra Pradesh, funding of Polavaram project and Amaravati capital city, the state government had pinned its hopes on the Union Budget this year, especially since it is the last full Budget of the BJP-led government before the 2019 general elections. Stating that Andhra Pradesh had received meagre allocations in the 2018-19 Budget, Naidu had called a meeting of his MPs, senior MLAs and party leaders in Amaravati on Sunday to review the TDP’s ties with the BJP. Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, TDP MP and Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Y S Chowdhary said they “would raise all unresolved and pending issues in Parliament and outside’’. He said his party was hopeful of a positive response from the Centre within the next few days, before the first part of the Budget Session ends on February 9. “At today’s meeting, we decided to take up the TDP-BJP alliance issue at a later date. Right now, we have to focus on why the Centre has not addressed issues like bridging the revenue deficit, hastening funds for Polavaram project, additional funding for Amravati capital city and new railway zone for Visakhapatnam,” said Kambampati Rammohan Rao, TDP Central Committee member and the party’s special representative in New Delhi. “The CM has asked the MPs to use all means possible to put pressure on the Centre and highlight our problems, including disrupting Parliament even if they face the possibility of suspension. The CM said he is committed to maintaining the coalition dharma, but the protests for justice for Andhra Pradesh should now be out in the open, rather than just sending requests and appeals. This is the ‘stage one’ strategy. From Tuesday (Parliament is closed on Monday to condole the death of an MP), our MPs will hold placards and protest in Parliament. We will decide what to do next after the Parliament session,’’ he said. Chowdhary said the party would not snap ties with the BJP. “Don’t talk of divorce, let us talk of marriage only,’’ he said. “The CM has issued some guidelines to party MPs on how to bring to the Centre’s attention to the state, including protesting in Parliament. Right now, that is our strategy,’’ he said. Barring Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju, all the remaining TDP MPs attended today’s meeting. “Not only are the CM and TDP leaders upset with the BJP for ignoring Andhra Pradesh, even the common man knows injustice has been done. The state has lost revenue base post-bifurcation, as Hyderabad has gone to Telangana. It needs hand-holding by the Centre for a few years, till the revenue deficit comes down and the state is up and running,’’ said Kesineni Srinivas, TDP MP from Vijayawada. While TDP MPs and leaders expressed displeasure over the Budget, Naidu is learnt to have appealed for calm and restrained them from making any adverse comments. The TDP had contested the 2014 polls in alliance with the BJP. The BJP has two MPs and five MLAs from Andhra Pradesh. Quote
Kool_SRG Posted February 4, 2018 Author Report Posted February 4, 2018 ‘TDP to fight for its demands, but won’t leave NDA for now’ After a meeting of party MPs and senior leaders with N. Chandrababu Naidu, TDP said instead of leaving the coalition, the party will raise its demands in Parliament Quote
Kool_SRG Posted February 4, 2018 Author Report Posted February 4, 2018 Hyderabad/Mumbai: N. Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is bitter that the Union budget had nothing special for Andhra Pradesh, but will stick with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for now. Instead of leaving the coalition, the party will raise its demands in Parliament. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of Naidu and TDP MPs at Vijayawada on Sunday to deliberate their next course of action. TDP had high hopes from the budget, expecting substantial funding for its upcoming capital Amaravati and the Polavaram irrigation project. “As of now, the alliance is still there. We will definitely fight it out (in Parliament). The BJP has not said anything about not wanting an alliance. I am confident that things will be fine,” Union minister and TDP’s parliamentary leader Y.S. Chowdary told reporters after the meeting. Despite the disappointment with the budget, TDP is expecting a positive response from the centre in the next four days, Chowdary said. Recently, Naidu had stated that if the BJP does not want the alliance, the TDP will chart its own course. His statements were seen as a response to the growing criticism against the TDP from the BJP’s state unit. Chowdary rejected reports that Naidu had talked to BJP’s national president Amit Shah about the alliance. The Union minister also said that the TDP will raise in Parliament all promises made for AP after its bifurcation in 2014. A TDP leader from Andhra Pradesh, who did not want to be identified, said his party is on the verge of leaving the alliance, but is still testing waters with the hope that things might still get sorted out. “There is fermentation of anti-BJP feeling in the party and among the people. So, if things don’t improve, then we will strike,” he said. The TDP leader added that Andhra Pradesh was expecting more than the Rs1,330 crore it received for Polavaram, and was hoping for a new railway zone for Visakhapatnam, among other things. “The next 20 days are important. If the alliance does break, the party will go ahead and say that only Naidu can save AP from its problems as the centre is not giving funds,” he said. A Shiv Sena functionary, who works in the publicity wing of the party, said that Naidu had called party chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday morning. “All BJP allies are unhappy with the way BJP is treating them even though they are the ones who helped the BJP grow. This is not how Atalji (Atal Bihari Vajpayee) treated NDA constituents. Naiduji is feeling slighted and that is why he got in touch with Uddhav sahib,” he said. However, the Shiv Sena has not officially confirmed the telephone call. On 23 January, Thackeray had declared that the Sena, another NDA constituent, would fight the next round of elections alone. Soon after, Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana wrote about other NDA constituents including the TDP feeling unhappy with the BJP. The TDP leader, however, denied it and said that no such communication has been made. A Maharashtra BJP functionary, who did not want to be named, said the Sena leadership was deliberately fuelling this “speculation” about Naidu calling Thackeray. “Naidu could be unhappy but he is not the one who would resort to such tactics. The Shiv Sena leadership is deliberately planting such stories about Naidu calling Uddhav Thackeray. The speculation was created a day before the TDP meeting to create an impression that all BJP allies are breaking away which is not the case,” said the BJP functionary. Quote
