There is no need of DAT(direct airside transit) visa if you have valid US visa. if your visa is expired then you need DAT visa. Ikkada US lo british air ways vallu ninnu flight kooda board avvanivvaru.. if you do not have valid Visa.

And DAT visa is just for you to be in air port and connect your connecting flight to India.

Adi annayi nee daggara valid visa visa(H1B, F1 etc) then you will not have any prob.

I recently traveled on British airways, via london heathrow, booked my ticket from make my trip, the transit time was around 8 hours when i went to india, and they did not ask any visa,, but you have to have a valid us visa,,
I mean if you have your h1 extension applied and the visa existing is not valid then you need to have a transit visa i guess, because one of my friends cancelled his ticket since his visa was on extension while going to india,
coming to the laptop and cabin bag, it will be a problem if you take a bigger cabin bag in the transit they will check the bag for the sizes in the heathrow, i faced it, but while coming from india i had a cabin bag as well as a laptop, i was allowed without any questions, neither did any of the fellow pessengers were questioned, hope this will help you ,,
