I would say over coming these two is pretty much impossible, even if he comes second any of the two its nothing less than victory for him, but pretty much a thing he would allign with some party at some point of time which is DMK given a chance.

Ya but any party should have a complete majority otherwise they have to invest all its time in safeguarding the interest of the supporting parties rather than concentrating on the development
