uttermost Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 I just saw that Silicon Valley TV show, which I normally avoid because it gives me anxiety issues. but the last two seasons that I caught up with, were a breeze, and full comedy. Not stressful. they are talking about mesh based (server free) 'new internet' as the killer app for the compression thingy the main guy built in the 1st season. I'm a little disappointed they didn't namedrop freenet, which is in existence for more than 20yrs now. remember we talked about something similar to it. you said its impossible. its not. the show is based on an imaginary lossess compression algo, but it is possible even without that algo (that algo definitely will boost this network usage). and it will be slow and requires some technical competence to keep yourself secure in that network. I don't really know if I'm tagging the right person @princeofheaven, because unless you abused me, its extremely rare that I remember ids in this db. Quote

With current technologies it's impossible to provide even basic security for such a peer-peer network. freenet itself works on the highest abstract layer with jre, and the network is completely out of reach for any app/script written for freenet. If you've used freenet, you would know, it feels like you are using 90s internet. even though there are a bunch of interesting stuff, and plenty of pirated books and movies in the network you can download for free, but @ around 20kbps speed. lol. uttermost Posted February 24, 2018 Author Report Posted February 24, 2018 the point is such an internet is possible, but probably will never be allowed to come. because there's no money to be made by the current leaders of the industry. It'll be basically the death of all internet companies. Quote
uttermost Posted February 24, 2018 Author Report Posted February 24, 2018 its a bit absurd that someone considers this 'pied piper' new internet thing as a good business idea. may be they meant to make money off the underlying transport layer through better compression algos. but that's even sillier or scarier. uttermost Posted February 24, 2018 Author Report Posted February 24, 2018 If such a compression algo is in the market, you cannot control its proliferation, even with a water tight patent. It will be available everywhere, there'll be a million 'new internets' before anyone notices. most of them run by anarchists. the world will be fcuked. and it'll be glorious to watch tech CEOs declare bankruptcies one after the other.
