Idassamed
GET AHEAD Rediff.com » Get ahead Indians lack creativity, according to Steve Woz. Do you agree? March 03, 2018 10:10 IST Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra doesn't agree with American inventor's thoughts about India. What about you? In an interview with The Times of India, the American engineer and inventor spoke about his friendship with Apple founder, late Steve Jobs, the future of coding and technology, and his views about India's talent. In his response, he detailed how a part of India, like Singapore, studies and works hard to get an MBA, maybe even have a Mercedes but lack creativity. Here's an excerpt from the interview, published in the Times of India: What are your views on India? Do you think a global tech company can emerge from here? I am not an anthropologist and I don’t know the culture of India well enough. I don’t see those big advances in tech companies. What is the biggest tech company here, Infosys maybe? I just don’t see that sort of thing coming out of Infosys and I have done keynotes for them three times. What's the missing link here? The culture here is one of success based upon academic excellence, studying, learning, practising and having a good job and a great life. For upper India, not the lower. I see two Indias. That’s a lot like Singapore study, study, work hard and you get an MBA, you will have a Mercedes but where is the creativity? The creativity gets left out when your behaviour is too predictable and structured, everyone is similar. Look at a small country like New Zealand, the writers, singers, athletes, it’s a whole different world. Within minutes since the interview went public, Woz's remarks became the talk of the Internet. Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra Group was among the first to respond. "I love it when such comments are made. Nothing like a sweeping stereotype to get our juices flowing & prove it wrong. Thanks @stevewoz Come back soon. We’ll make you sing a different tune…” he responded to Woz's comment on Twitter. "Did he just stereotype a whole country?' Vidya Srinivasan, an engineer at Microsoft tweeted. "Did it ever occur to #stevewozniak that the CEO’s of two of the biggest tech companies are Indians? Ever heard of Satya Nadella or Sundar Pichai?" Srinivasan wrote on the microblogging site. Advertisement
uttermost
slightly tweak it to.. upper caste Indians lack creativity in technology. He's right on point for the most part. Hope all these caste neutral warriors raise their kids to be more decent than they were (very doubtful though). Even in the west, Indian kids have to fight a lot of forces to adopt an unconventional path for themselves.
uttermost
I can bet that not a single comment criticizing Woz on this will be either interesting or insightful. Its just upper caste morons losing their sh1t, and using western social terms to defend their regressive sh1t back home. lose your hold on India, and see how creative India can get. (may or may not work out).

uttermost
Print 10 times more money, and give it away to the poor, and lower middle class, through fancy education, food and hospital schemes. it'll create a bigger growth than building roads, bridges or fancy airports at this point. hhahaha.. it won't happen. because ..... Rest is all shiaat lol. what about working on expired patents on 'material science engineering', like expanding 3d printing capabilities? he's talking about creativity, and you are talking about research. US created a whole industry out of govt funded research in the 50s, 60s. That research is available for India too, which is not able to replicate it. Indians use google. Chinese use baidu plus other chinese search engines. it didn't require 'material science' research.

uttermost
India is a regressive hellhole. No point talking about it actually. better off to focus on our respective states.
uttermost
guys in their 20s are busy crying on reservations, when they can be founding companies. or trying something new.
uttermost
'profound' research. lol. that too in material science. I think you should look up how utterly boring material science research is. profundity is often used only to describe philosophical exercises. its not surprising you mix up both, because to you science is just something that can be achieved by thinking hard. lol. uttermost
Venkatraman Ramakrishnan had worse things to say about Indian science. hahaha.. Its not just lack of funding that affects Indian science. Its lack of discipline, and caste structures too (like the one that killed Rohit Vemula). Now don't jump on me about Rohit Vemula scientific credentials. I just pointed to him as an example of how people in charge of science in India expect higher standards from the lower castes (ilayaraja level brilliance) to accommodate them, whereas they'll happily accommodate someone from their caste group, even though he/she is mediocre.
