Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its first list of 44 candidates for Assembly elections in Tripura which is scheduled to take place on 18 February. BJP announced candidates for 44 of 51 seats on Saturday on which the party will fight in the upcoming assembly polls in the state. According to Indian Express, all former Congress MLAs who jumped ship – first to the Trinamool Congress, and then the BJP last year – found their names in the first list. However, the party is yet to announce candidates for seven seats. As per the report, multiple names are being considered for these seats and party leaders were unable to arrive at a consensus yesterday.

The meeting was chaired by BJP president Amit Shah and was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and members of the party’s central committee. The BJP, however, refrained from announcing a chief ministerial candidate for the state elections.

The party will contest on 11 of the 20 Assembly constituencies reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, leaving nine, out of the total 60 seats in the Assembly, for its ally, tribal separatist Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT). The list includes the name of BJP’s state general secretary Pratima Bhowmik who will be contesting from Dhanpur, the constituency of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. The party has decided to field its state president Biplab Kumar Deb from Banamalipur. “We have considered all sections and walks of society while choosing our candidates. While there are are 10 seats reserved for SC candidates, we are going to field 11 SC candidates. One is contesting from a regular seat”, he said.

Sudip Roy Burman, who had won the Agartala seat on a Congress ticket in the last election, had joined the BJP in August 2017 along with five others: Ashish Kumar Saha (MLA from Town Bordowali seat), Diba Chandra Hrangkhwal (Karamchhara), Biswa Bandhu Sen (Dharmanagar), Pranajit Singh Roy (Radhakishorepur) and Dilip Sarkar (Badharghat). They have all got BJP tickets from the same constituencies.

The BJP did not win any seat in the last state assembly polls but emerged as the main challenger to the ruling CPI(M). Several leaders from parties such as the Congress and the TMC joined its ranks in the last couple of years.
