Asked them, whether I can drop coverage for my family, if they are out of country for a extended period of time, they said I can , by providing them the travel itinerary. They are out from Sep-2017 to Mar-2018. Mine is employer group plan. Quote

Septmeber to December should be fine... rest worry about next year... go to a CPA... they will do it for you... I did mine the same way... when my family was out... he asked why they were not insured... I told them they were out of country... he said thats fine and no penalty.. Quote

Did your CPA select had insurance all year around? If not, what penalty exemption he used? Quote

You wife and kid insurance for 4 months can be waived under life changing events since they travlled from India to USA. In this case you need to file with CA not turbo tax..may be turbo tax dont have in deepth tool to take these situation into account. I am in same boat few years back and dont need to pay any fine..
