BHOPAL:  As the nationwide anger spirals over the horrific rape and murder of an 8-year-old child, Asifa Bano, from Jammu and Kashmir, a BJP leader in faraway Madhya Pradesh has introduced a bizzare conspiracy theory.

Pakistan, said state BJP chief Nandkumar Singh Chauhan, has engineered the whole episode. "They have even chanted slogans of Jai Shri Ram to divide India," said the 65-year-old, who is also represents Khandwa in the Lok Sabha.
 

 

Asifa was kidnapped and held captive from a village in Jammu's Kathua district on January 10. For the next seven days, she was sedated, starved and gang-raped by a group that included police officers. Then she was murdered - her head was bashed with a stone to ensure that she was dead.

The horror story that unfolded in the police chargesheet even said an officer had asked the killer to wait so he could rape the child one last time.    

Eight men have been arrested for the crime. The police said it was meant as a terror tactic to drive out a Muslim nomad community to which the child belonged from a Hindu-dominated area. The nomadic Bakarwals roam the area and there have been calls earlier from various groups to flush them out. The murder has now deepened the divide.

This is where Nandkumar Singh Chauhan sees a Pakistan link. "Pakistan is behind what has happened in Kathua, there is not even 1 per cent of Hindus in Kashmir," the lawmaker told reporters today while participating in the BJP's nationwide fast to protest against the recent washed out session of Parliament, for which the party holds the Congress responsible.

The BJP is yet to comment on Mr Chauhan's statement. This morning, Union minister VK Singh expressed outrage against the unspeakable atrocity. "We have failed Asifa as humans. But she will not be denied justice," the former army chief tweeted.

NEW DELHI:  As the horrific rape and murder of eight-year-old Asifa in Kathua gets communalised and politicised, the Jammu and Kashmir police chief has hit back at demands for a CBI probe from the Jammu Bar Association and members of the BJP.

Asifa was kidnapped and held captive from a village in Jammu's Kathua district on January 10. For the next seven days, she was sedated, starved and gang-raped. Then she was murdered - her head was bashed with a stone to ensure that she was dead.
 

 

Local policemen attempted to shield the suspects and destroyed evidence. But when arrests were made, the Mufti Mehbooba government ordered the case to the crime branch. That is when the horror story started unfolding. It turned out that the gang-rape was a tactic to drive out a Muslim nomad community to which the child belonged from a Hindu-dominated area.

As the crime branch started making arrests, local political activists started attacking the police. They were supported by local politicians including the BJP's two ministers in the Jammu and Kashmir government.

According to a tweet by BJP leader Ram Madhav, the state BJP unit passed a resolution on 1 April condemning the heinous crime that had taken place more than two months earlier. It also underlined that "the innocent should not be harassed".

 

It has been insinuated in Jammu that the policemen were gunning for leaders from a particular religion; a campaign that the police has been furiously trying to counter and send a strong message against those communalising the issue.

The probe team is headed by a Kashmiri Pandit and a Kashmiri Muslim officer and the police today asked the government to task prosecutors from the Sikh community for the trial.

Mr Vaid told NDTV that the Crime Branch and the special team, which probed the "horrific crime", had done a professional job and hadn't spared even their colleagues who had compromised the investigation and tried to destroy evidence.

"Two special police officers have been arrested. So four of our own men who, for whatever reason, whether for bribe or whatever reason did something wrong... even they have not been spared. So that speaks of the fairness of the investigation of Jammu and Kashmir Police", he said.

Asked why the Jammu Bar Association says it has no faith in the police and wants a CBI inquiry, Mr Vaid said: "I think only they can answer this why they don't have faith in the crime branch of the J&K Police... J&K Police, which is fighting almost war-like situation and which can sacrifice its men in Kashmir can do such a great job, it is admired all over the country for its professional working and I am really surprised if somebody says they don't have trust on J&K Police."

Asked if he was disappointed that the BJP ministers in the state were questioning their own police force, Mr Vaid said: "I have nothing much to add. You have already said it but I do feel bad about it."

Kathua Case: Meerut Student Travelled To Rape Jammu 8-Year-Old, Says Chargesheet

 

NEW DELHI:  An eight-year-old girl was gang-raped repeatedly inside a village temple, kept sedated for hours, and raped again just before being killed in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua by six men, including one who had been "invited" to come all the way from Meerut to "satisfy his lust", the police have told a court.

Asifa, held captive for a week in January, was strangled and then hit with a large stone by the rapists "just to be sure that she was dead", a police charge-sheet reveals in horrifying detail.
 

 

The kidnapping, rape and killing of the girl of the Bakherwal community at the Rassana area of Kathua was part of a planned, chilling strategy to instill fear and drive the nomadic tribe out of the region, reveals the 15-page charge-sheet filed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the chief judicial magistrate's court on Monday.

Sanji Ram, the caretaker of the "Devisthan" (small temple), is listed as the main conspirator behind the crime that has left the nation shocked at the sheer depravity of it.

 

Sanji Ram was allegedly joined by special police officers Deepak Khajuria and Surender Verma, friend Parvesh Kumar or Mannu, Sanji Ram's underage nephew and Sanji Ram's son Vishal Jangotra or "Shamma". According to the charge-sheet, on January 11, Sanji Ram's nephew phoned his cousin Vishal Jangotra and asked him to return from Meerut, where he was studying, if he wanted to "satisfy his lust".

Just before Asifa was killed in the forests, Deepak Khajuria, a Special Police Officer, told the accused to wait as "he wanted to rape her before she is killed". The girl was once again gang-raped before her head was bashed in.

"The juvenile (Sanji Ram's nephew) hit the girl twice with a stone on her head and later dumped her body in the forest after their plan to throw the body in a canal could not materialize due to the failure to arrange a vehicle," the charge-sheet says.

The charge-sheet also names two more policemen - head constable Tilak Raj and sub-inspector Anand Dutta - who allegedly took Rs. 4 lakh from Sanji Ram and destroyed crucial evidence.
The child's body was found in the forests near her village on January 17.

Asifa went missing on January 10 while grazing horses in the forest. Investigators said the accused men kidnapped her after pretending to help her find her horses.

A day later, her parents went to the temple and asked Sanji Ram about her. He said she may have gone to a relative's house. According to the charge-sheet, Sanji Ram gave the girl sedatives while holding her at the Devisthan.

His nephew, a school dropout, turned out to be the main player in the kidnapping and murder. He raped the child repeatedly along with his cousin and police officer Khajuria, says the charge-sheet.

The nephew's medical report shows he is not underage but it is yet to be accepted by the court.

"Khajuria incited the juvenile to kidnap the girl, promising to help him cheat and pass his exams in return. Subsequently, he shared the plan, worked out by Sanji Ram and Khajuria, with Parvesh Kumar alias 'Mannu', his close friend and asked for the juvenile's help in executing the plan," the charge-sheet reveals.

Vishal Jangotra reached Kathua after his cousin's call and also raped the sedated girl along with two of the accused. Sanji Ram and his nephew performed the usual temple rituals to avoid suspicion.

It was on Sanji Ram's direction that the child was removed from the temple and taken to a culvert in the forest where the accused planned to kill her.

On January 23, about a week after the body was discovered, the government handed over the case to the Crime Branch, which formed a Special Investigation Team.

The police learnt that in the first week of January, Sanji Ram decided to act on his plan to dislodge the Bakherwal community; it had been brewing in his mind. "He made the accused Deepak Khajuria and his nephew part of the conspiracy and assigned them tasks separately and individually," the chargesheet said.

Sanji Ram surrendered on March 20 a day after his son was arrested from Meerut.

After Asifa's body was recovered, head constable Raj, who knew about the conspiracy, met Sanji Ram and requested him to "hand over" one of the accused as there was too much anger among the Bakerwals. However, Sanji Ram paid Raj Rs. 1 lakh.

The investigation explained in detail how the accused police officials washed the clothes of the girl before sending them to the forensic laboratory and planted false evidence.

Sanji Ram was against the Bakherwals living in the Rassana, Kootah and Dhamyal area and always kept on instigating people of his community against giving them land to graze.

జనవరి 10న ఎనిమిదేళ్ల అసిఫాను కిడ్నాప్‌ చేసి మత్తు పదార్థాలు ఎక్కించి, కొన్నిరోజుల పాటు సామూహిక అత్యాచారానికి పాల్పడ్డారు.  ఆ నిందితుల్లో పోలీసు అధికారులు, టీనేజీ కుర్రాళ్లు ఉన్నారు. చంపడానికి ముందు కూడా ఆ చిన్నారిపై మరోసారి అత్యాచారం చేశారు. ఛార్జ్‌షీట్‌లో దాఖలైన ప్రకారం ఆ బాలికపై అత్యాచారం చేయడానికి ఓ వ్యక్తి మీరట్‌ నుంచి ఘటనా స్థలానికి చేరుకున్నాడు. జనవరి 17న  ఆమె మృతదేహం లభ్యమైంది. నిందితులను కాపాడటం కోసం పోలీసులు సాక్ష్యాలను తారుమారు చేయడానికి ప్రయత్నించారు. ఈ ఘటనపై నిరసనలు కశ్మీర్‌ సంకీర్ణ ప్రభుత్వంలో విభేదాలకు రణమయ్యాయి. భాజపా రాష్ట్ర నాయకత్వం సమస్యలు సృష్టిస్తోందని రాజనాథ్ సింగ్‌కు ముఫ్తీ ఫిర్యాదు చేశారు. నిందితులకు మద్దతుగా ఉన్న భాజపా నాయకులకు వ్యతిరేకంగా ఇంతకాలానికి వి.కె.సింగ్‌ స్పందించారు.   

ఆమె చనిపోయేముందు నరకం చవిచూసిందని ఛార్జ్‌షీట్ ద్వారా వెల్లడైంది. హ్యాష్‌ట్యాగ్‌ జస్టిస్‌ ఫర్‌ అసిఫా, హ్యాష్‌ట్యాగ్‌ రేప్‌ అండ్‌ మర్డర్‌ ఆఫ్‌ హ్యుమానిటీ పేరుతో సెలిబ్రటీలు న్యాయం కోసం పోరాడుతున్నారు.

ఇప్పటివరకు ఈ కేసులో ఆరుగురు వ్యక్తులు అరెస్ట్ అయ్యారు. బఖేర్వాల్‌ సంచారజాతిలో భయం కలిగించడం కోసమే ఈ దారుణానికి ఒడిగట్టినట్లు తెలుస్తోంది.
