lol. Vizag lost because the state govt put all eggs in Hyd basket. everything else is bullshit.

Its how state govts function all over India. corner both political and financial power in capitals. nothing more.

Vizag will still do well, if Vijayawads does well. both these cities destinies are now interlinked.

By saying that state govt put all its eggs in one basket, you just stepped on .

LOL

there was a push given to Vizag by establishing PSU’s, but still, the region upto which the effect could be felt upon has not penetrated much.

Vizag will and is doing very good. But to compete with mega cities,  I don’t think it’s viable option and moreover, Vizag if it becomes a mega city, will damage itself and quality of life...at present shape and size, I’m sure it’s heaven in aP

nah!! Having PSUs means nothing, unless private money (which is actually govt backed money through public work contracts, or even any private investment etc) flows through the city. That chance is only to the city where people are close to power (vijayawada now, Hyderabad earlier).

With enough investment, Vizag can get everything. Kolkata is a thriving city, which is serving the 'underdeveloped hinterland'. In any way, a city is an economy unto itself. The reason for Vizag's lack of success is the lack of investment by the state govt.

megacities don't form by themselves. They are created by the will of the govt. and yes, by putting eggs into one basket. Only idiots like himacream in this db, believe in the 'power of free market' to create megacities. :)

Vizag can become a megacity without much damage to quality of anything surrounding it. And even if the damage happens, it can be repaired in the future.  Lack of political will is the reason.

May be vizagites don't care and don't want to fight the hard fight. that may be one reason.

With the right plan, and considerable resources, a state govt can turn even Ongole into a big mega city.Ofcourse it'll take a couple decades.

WIth so called right plan, govt can do lot of things...but its not govt's duty or scope to make sure the city ranks best on the scale, govt limitation ends at welfare.

check how much govt spends on welfare and how much on money to its pet projects, besides salaries to all those employees majority of who live in the capital. That is besides underwriting 'private' investments like airports, metro, etc.

govts have changed since the fateful year 1991 in India. Now their duty is to serve local and foreign business honchos. The least they can do is to boast about 'developing' atleast one city, since they are going to take away resources from other locations.

ofcourse traditional govt mandate is people's welfare, but govts have long forgotten that. and in fact they get mocked for indulging in it.

Technically, the govt has no limitations. and even if it does, it does not end at welfare.
