How do illegal immigrants get a social security number?

In the past, there have been many ways for an illegal immigrant to get a SSN.

1. Anchor baby’s number. You’d be surprised how many kid’s appear to be doing construction work and cooking in kitchens.
2. Other relatives (and friends). There a people with a valid SSN who allow friends and family to use their SSN. Does McDonald’s know that the same SSN is also being used by workers at Wendy’s?
3. Same as #2 for money. This is common in the community. Some people are friends…but not close friends, not close enough to do it for free. So they charge for rental of their valid SSN… Sharing the same identity. This has 2 variations.
   
   On the southern border there are many family businesses. They have valid IDs of cousins and inlaws, of men, women, young, old, fat, skinny, tall, short, etc. They do a little makeup work and rent the IDs for 1/2 hour to walk across the bridge. On the other side of the bridge they return the rented ID to a member of the family business.
   
   The former Satyam consulting firm would have several IT consultants pretend to be the same person and use the same IDs, including SSN, of course. It didn’t come public until Satyam collapsed for unrelated reasons. Is someone going to tell me that TATA-TCS and Infosys haven’t done the same thing?
4. The above are the victimless methods. It is also common for a person to just make up a number out of thin air. A quick check of wikipedia and it is not difficult to create a plausible number. And most any printer can print a SS card. After it is carried in the pocket for a while it appears worn and hard to see that it is fake or real. The number picked randomly might be in use, or it might never have been used, or it might be the number of a dead person, or a child not working, or of a retired person not working. In most cases, the victim never finds out he is a victim.
5. There are businesses that sell fake numbers and fake cards. Sometimes they do a better job of choosing a number than an amateur. But sometimes they are no better than the amateur. These businesses also sell IDs to citizens who are DUI drivers and have other reasons to get a new identity. At the high end, you have the people who have Matt Damon for a customer.
6. I’m sure there are other ways. People are quite creative.
