bhaigan Posted April 20, 2018 Report Posted April 20, 2018 Qualcomm starts large layoffs Qualcomm, the semiconductor giant, began a round of massive layoffs in an effort to cut spending by $1 billion, Reuters reports. Citing documents the company has filed with the state of California, Bloomberg reports that 1,500 jobs will be cut. The company employs almost 34,000 globally and 13,000 in San Diego, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The chipmaker has faced difficult times, partially due to the political climate and the declining trade relationship between the U.S. and China, The New York Times reports. Qualcomm lost the ability to export semiconductors to one of its biggest customers, ZTE on Monday, after the Trump administration sanctioned the Chinese telecom maker, stopping it from buying U.S. technology for seven years, per the Times. Last month the Trump administration blocked Broadcom's attempt to buy Qualcomm for $117 billion citing national security concerns. Quote
bhaigan Posted April 20, 2018 Author Report Posted April 20, 2018 Ben Prusinski Ben PrusinskiCloud ☁ | Enterprise Sales|Marketing|Solutions Enablement|SaaS|PaaS|IaaS I bet the Indian H1b will not get let go and keep their jobs as the American engineers are fired en masse. Ben Prusinski Ben PrusinskiCloud ☁ | Enterprise Sales|Marketing|Solutions Enablement|SaaS|PaaS|IaaS Touche! Yeah in long run it costs WAY less to hire H1b because they can pay less in wages, no benefits, work the H1b like a slave 24x7 and abuse them or threaten them in so many ways. It really is 21st century model for indentured labor. And, I thought we had advanced to do away with slave labor practices from the 18th century? I guess not as long as Wall $treet is in control. During earlier layoff of Qualcomm many as you call Indian H1Bs also lost their jobs. It is not the VISA but the business structure which affects jobs. Last time there were layoffs because they had lost Samsung as a client and those people who support Samsung account got laid off. This time its ZTE. For a company to sponsor H1B takes a lot of money and legal support. Full-time H1Bs are not cheap to hire for any company. LikeLike Bhooshan Gadkari’s commentReply Quote
