PEORIA — A woman of Indian descent was scammed out of $5,000 this week by a person claiming to be with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, according to a Peoria police report.

The 25-year-old woman told police a man claiming to be with the federal government called her claiming she had an arrest warrant for not filling out alien registration paperwork and demanding she send money via Google Play and Stream Care cards. She placed $5,000 on the cards and called back with the numbers so the money could be retrieved by the caller.

She later realized she had been victimized in a scam and notified police. The only information available on the suspect was the phone number with a 202 area code that showed up on the victim’s phone when she was contacted.
