It is true man. but the reason was obvious 2yrs ago too. The same reason Trump won (and I bet on Trump, inspite of my disgust for that kind of bumbling idiot holding even a paper pushing job). 

The reason is simple. democrat traditional voters have stopped voting. and republicans offer this 'new economic' vision where they can cut more social services, and the people lap up the idea like its the best. See the whole range of idiotic articles on how horrible Obamacare was. It is to pander to people who hated giveaways. Nobody cares about people who are affected. More and more people have come around to the idea that welfare recipients are a burden, and that is the biggest democrat problem, and their message is actually complementary to the republican (almost same), except on a few cultural issues like gay marriage, abortion and all that cosmetic bullshit.

Most people who are against Trump  are against him for silly reasons like infidelity, his loud personality, etc, but the focus on his policies goes under the radar. So the republican leaning assholes can claim victory on all and sundry while democrats are busy raking up Russia and sh1t.

Trump is disgusting, his supporters are *** pathetic losers. All this is true. But democrats have lost the plot (not losing). Unless they fully embrace Sanders style of populism (even that may not be enough), they won't get out of this hole. Even Sanders vision is not enough, in fact.

Trump is forcing a new kind of resurgence in leftist activity. Opposition to him has been terrific.

But, but, the democratic party is the biggest party pooper to this resurgence. The elite in the democratic party are so addicted to access politics, and money, that they are unable to embrace the shift.

Things will shift from red to blue in due time, if the democrat party dies. Even if they are a party, they are unable to respond to the current political climate with a vision that people can get behind.

talking about abortion, Russia, and other bullshit is not enough.

The same is true in India. BJP/Republicans have exploited a certain nasty side of human psyche - the side that refuses to pitch in, or the side that lays out conditions for people who want help, something that is unworkable in a large democratic setup.

to respond to that kind of psycopathic messaging needs a level of conviction, that has not yet permeated into popular politics (may be Sanders a little bit).

politics is a game for people liike us (and especially people like TS who claims to make a 'lot of money' off of it). This includes democratic leaning people too.

the only use politics has for us is the opportunity to one up each other in a 'I told you so', 'you suck', vicious cycle.

but it has real implications for a lot of people. this BJP/Republican style politics is just hypocrisy. Sorta like a dad telling his kid to go find work(capitalism), but who would never let the kid out of sight for him to have any meaningful interaction with the world (nationalism).

Okay its not the elite in Democratic party, but even regular middle class democrat voters are addicted to the new age wealth. They only care about useless issues like gay marriage, abortion, and have ceded economic space to republican ideas.

Now they pretend shock when everybody joins to vote republican. 

Even for a total loser like Trump.
