This is how public transport system should work. what about the percentage of taxes that goes towards running the transit system? if its being run by private parties, y are taxpayers paying for it? siru Posted June 12, 2018 Report Posted June 12, 2018 Funding[edit] Sales tax[edit] In addition to fare collections, the MARTA budget is funded by a 1% sales tax in Fulton, Clayton and DeKalb counties along with limited federal money. In 2017, the City of Atlanta raised their sales tax for MARTA to 1.5% to improve and expand MARTA. For fiscal year 2007, MARTA had a farebox recovery ratio of 31.8%.[7] By law, funds from the 1% sales tax must be split evenly between MARTA's operational and Capital expenditure budgets. Quote

New York City Transit Authority which is perhaps the biggest public transit in the world is a govt. owned and operated. same with any city's transit in usa and also in japan. Hmm...for the City of New York, MTA, metropolitan transit authority which operates one of the largest public transport system perhaps is completely owned by the government but it has sub-contactors : Bombardier,AECOM and few others who operate some of the systems. So, technically...Even MTA does not operate 100% even with its subsidaries, NJ transit and Port authority, most of the services are contracted to bombardier,PATH and AECOM which actually run the system as per the contract terms of MTA. and so is the same with all other transit systems in USA. Okay...here is how it works. FOr example: a transit authority does not nessasarily run the train. It is a private player, usually bombardier who runs the train on behalf of transit authority. This private player has nothing to do with taxes, subsidies,no.of people travelling, or political reasons. This private player is being paid for sun x-number of services from point -a to point-b as directed by the transit authority. I have no idea what you mean by taxes. Quote

London Transit....governmed by London council but run by provate players same is the case with Paris...and even Moscow which perhaps is athe largest network and carries more people.. chinese transit system is also same... Avakashavadi Posted June 12, 2018 Report Posted June 12, 2018 for that matter of fact, Most of the modern day airlines were once owned by governments..British Air, Air France, KLM, Royal Dutch, Alitalia, etc which eventually got privatised as governments realised they cannot run the transport system..same is going to happen in India...air india is now being privatised..we all know what happened with air india.. USA does not have national airliens but it is still at forefront of aviation. The reason being private players but they are governed by Fedral Aviation Adminstration. Quote
