If you were issued a U.S. work permit in the past 2 months, you may have to give it back

If you were issued a U.S. work permit, officially an Employment Authorization Document or EAD, in the past two months, you may be asked to give it back. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced Thursday it was recalling about 800 EAD documents. A USCIS statement said the documents were misprinted, changing the boxes for the first and last names of the card holders. The misprinted cards were issued mostly to people who applied for work permits as part of a petition for political asylum, using form I-589, and received the cards in April and May. USCIS said it would notify the people affected or their lawyers to return the EAD cards in prepaid envelopes within 20 days.

Anyone needing urgent proof of their permission to work can contact the CIS customer service at 800-375-5283, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

As passage to the U.S. gets harder for tech workers, vital ties between India and Silicon Valley begin to fray

HYDERABAD, India — The sun glares down on an ancient temple where Pruthvi Yadav joins a swirling mass of devotees. The deity here, he’s been told, is particularly powerful at granting U.S. visas.

On this 98-degree morning at the Chilkur Balaji Temple, he’s swept into the crowd praying to Lord Balaji — walking 11 laps around the temple for a wish, 108 laps for an answered prayer. As his bare feet shuffle against the scorching ground, his mind focuses on a far-flung place: California’s Silicon Valley.

In the middle of the crowd, a priest, C.S. Rangarajan, squawks into a microphone: “Donald Trump is temporary! Lord Balaji is forever!”

It’s a quip Rangarajan often makes at the temple, where he says more and more people are coming to him with discouraging news since the Trump administration, reluctant to admit immigrants, took power. Some speak of visa applications with CANCELED stamped on them in red block letters. Of rushed departures. Jobs, families and opportunities left behind.
