According to Valmiki Ramayana, Out of lust, soorpanaka asks Rama to marry her. Rama says that he is married and accompanied by his fine. He adds that, though Laxmana is married, his wife isn't with him here. So, advises her to see if Laxmana is interested in her. When she approaches Laxmana and expresses here desire, Laxmana says that he is servant to his brother Rama & says that if he marries her, she too turns a servant. Laxmana says that Rama is a good match to her. Surpanaka believes that Rama is neglecting her because of Sita & she says that she is going to eat sita alive. Angry Rama instructs Laxmana to deface her. And on Rama's instruction, Lashmana chops off Surpanaka's ears & nose with the sword. Quote
