Telecom Watchdog Chief's Personal Details Leaked After He Threw Challenge

Within hours of tweeting his Aadhaar number, Elliot Anderson replied to RS Sharma.

NEW DELHI:

Alleged personal details of India telecom watchdog chief RS Sharma were leaked on Saturday after the TRAI chairman threw a challenge and tweeted his 12-digit Aadhaar asking if it had made him vulnerable to any security risk.

A French security expert, who goes by the nickname Elliot Alderson and uses Twitter handle @fs0c131y, in a series of tweets caused ripples on the social media, leaking "personal address, DoB, your alternate phone number" and explaining to Mr Sharma, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chairman, how risky it was to make the Aadhaar number public.

"People managed to get your personal address, DoB and your alternate phone number. I stop here, I hope you will understand why make your Aadhaar number public is not a good idea," Elliot Alderson wrote.

R S Sharma, a known defender of Aadhaar, has been maintaining that the unique ID does not violate privacy and the government reserved a right to create such a database of residents since it gives subsidies on state-run welfare schemes.

Amid a debate on privacy concerns, which has also reached the Supreme Court, activists and people in general fear that the 12-digit biometric number was harmful to citizen's privacy.

"My Aadhaar number is 7*************. Now I give this challenge to you: Show me one concrete example where you can do any harm to me," tweeted R S Sharma, whose tenure ends on August 9.

A twitter user had earlier asked R S Sharma to "walk your talk" after the TRAI chief tweeted his interview with an online portal in which he strongly defended Aadhaar and rejected apprehensions that one billion Aadhaar accounts were vulnerable.

He said there had not been a single instance of data being breached and had there been one, the entire Aadhaar database would have been vulnerable.

Within hours of tweeting his Aadhaar number, Elliot Anderson replied to Mr Sharma.

The security researcher posted a picture of RS Sharma with a portion of it blackened. Elliot Anderson, who is known to have revealed security loopholes in the Aadhaar data system, also posted screenshots of Mr Sharma's leaked details with key areas blackened and hidden.

One of the screenshots even carried his PAN details. But that was also hidden

chill man....leak chesindi PAN card details....bank account details...

a details tho pedda peekedi emi ledu...and more over, all these details are more or less in public domain...

aadhar is not equal to SSN and is not tied to any security issues.

its completely safe...although it will become vulnerable one fine day

PAN card details you can get from any bank account and PAN is not a secure number ....bank account number, PAN are linked and we have compromised these details all around...remember all the photocopies that we have given out...for ID proofs..address proofs...cheque deposits....all those paper trails have already found way into wrong hands..

means what ba?

any centralized database of citizens is bs.

world should be moving towards decentralization using the tech advances. more centralization, more power in hands of the few, whether its thieves or govt.

requires change of mindset itself.

govt officials ni thannali. They have an easy solution to all their problems in form of aadhar, and so they've embraced it, and left citizens in the cold.

aadhar should be hacked, and its database bombed. Fcuk people should learn and develop systems to provide services at the local level without being addicted to easy and dangerous solutions like Aadhar.

Its the first step to fascism.

Aadhar is about control. about codifying relations between the state and its citizens. It should never be allowed.

If it takes digital terrorism to destroy this sort of imposition on people, then it will be done.

its 'security' features are not a reason to adopt it.

they'll keep improving security features, and one fine day, it'll be impenetrable.

that is also a big problem with such databases, with becoming a single point of interaction between state and its citizens.

India lo sontha street lo drainage overflow aithey ney evaru pattinchu koru, inka central level evadanna evarnanna 10githe pattinchukuntaara? antha trust level lo undha okkori madhya lo, India lo?

Aadhar privacy itself is a big BulShitt.

All the privacy data and details you think is in danger of because of a centralised number, let me remind you that the so called privacy is already in public domain...

I seriously don;t understand what you mean by privacy and threat to privacy ?

should possess endhi? lol.

people already have ration cards, no? if one has ration card from one state, is that not enough to identify his Indianness?

first of all no private player has the resources and power to do something like aadhar, forcing an identity on people.

simple link ba. There's no need for an Indian identity, unless the person travels outside of India. and for that, we have passport.

people receive most (almost all) of their govt services from the state govt, not the central govt.

central govt can fcuk right off.

Yes, people have ration cards. So does Bangadeshi illegal migrants in India also have ration cards and have become overnight Indian citizens....sinhalese tamils also became indian citizens by getting a ration card...all together there are about 10 million of them in India..

Ration cards were given without scientific methods. All that you need is a signature from your village administrative officer confirming your name, birthdate and father's name with the village and thats it, you would get a ration card.

and ration cards are now not being used anymore except about 30-40% population and atleast in the late 90's, the usage of ration cards was covering 70-80% population but not anymore.
