Idassamed Posted August 23, 2018 Report Posted August 23, 2018 https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Hyderabad/it-corridor-high-on-technology-low-on-infrastructure/article24754553.ece The most vaunted IT hub encompassing Madhapur, Gachibowli and surrounding areas is also plagued by unending traffic woes, partly owing to monsoon damage to roads and partly to the never-ending road and development work. It’s a nightmare for residents of Khajaguda, Raidurgam and Gachibowli to commute, owing to the dug-up stretch linking Khajaguda to Gachibowli and Hitech City. Incomplete road widening work by the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation (HRDC) has worsened the road condition. The work was launched in monsoon and has continued for a while without break, thanks to the dry spell in July. But with the city receiving rain in the last few weeks, commuters are the ones that are badly hit. Motorists are forced to move at a snail’s pace owing to haphazardly covered up road. The commuting time has doubled and the cost of vehicle maintenance has gone up, commuters complain. Poor planning A part of the road is taken for parking heavy and special machinery, and the other part opened for traffic is filled with slush and debris. Bad timing of the work, poor planning and slow execution have made commuting a nightmare on this stretch. On Khajaguda road and in the vicinity of Delhi Public School, work has been on for building a culvert/bridge to prevent water logging on the road. The dug-up mud is dumped on the roadside, making it difficult for people, especially senior citizens visiting banks and other centres, to travel. Despite being the preferred destination for residential and commercial project developers in western Hyderabad for some years now, the Gachibowli roads have not got the attention that they deserve. Already struggling to come to terms with a sharp increase in the number of buildings, people, commercial establishments, automobiles as well as the blatant violation of traffic rules, the battered roads owing to continuing rain could well be the last straw for the residents of the area. An eyesore and a hazard is the road turning left, from Old Mumbai Highway, and a key link for thousands of households, including Kendriya Vihar and J.V. Colony. Little is left of the road as potholes are growing bigger by the day. Compounding the problem for road users, particularly pedestrians, is water logging, a stinking dustbin nearby, wrong side driving and vehicles eating much of the space on the kerb and either side of the lane for several metres. Though the neighbourhood has acquired reputation as a hub for new-age industry, the roads, be it at Gachibowli, Lingampally or Madhapur, call for an overhaul. One of the immediate challenges for the residents of the area is the increasing time they are forced to spend on commute due to bad roads.
