Single itinerary aithe I think it follows the lowest allowance in the alliance rule. So air india and united are a part of star alliance and if United has only one checked baggage, that is what will be allowed on the entire trip in my experience.

Either ways try calling them and asking them about it. Persuade them into letting you take two bags for free.
