Police warn of armed group breaking into cars, garages throughout the St. Louis region

ST. LOUIS • St. Louis police officials warned officers of an armed group that was breaking into garages and vehicles throughout the region, including an FBI agent’s vehicle Friday in St. Louis.

The warning, obtained by the Post-Dispatch, says officers should use “EXTREME caution” responding to car or garage break-ins and suspicious person calls, as armed members of the group point guns at the garage area to provide cover for their companions.

The warning says shots were fired in one recent incident at a victim who interrupted a garage burglary. They said vehicles and homes in Arnold, Ladue, Creve Coeur, Ellisville, Manchester and elsewhere in St. Louis County have been hit.

 

The notice also mentions the FBI incident. The FBI said Friday that an agency vehicle was broken into but no guns were taken.

Asked about that, St. Louis police provided an incident report of the “theft of government property.” The report says a witness spotted an older, white Chevy Impala parked next to the victim’s vehicle in the Northhampton neighborhood about 4:55 a.m. Friday. The vehicle sped away several minutes later.

 

The thieves broke into the vehicle through the trunk, the report says, and removed several unspecified items.

 

The day before, a car was broken into in the 5600 block of Marquette Avenue, the warning notice says. Police say the Impala could also be a Chevy Malibu with front-end damage and a missing or damaged headlight.

The thieves typically break into vehicles about 1 a.m. and return between 4 and 5 a.m. to use stolen garage remotes to enter and burglarize garages, the warning notice says.
