It was way before that.. Khomeini was the religious backlash to a dictatorship in Iran supported by the Americans since the 50s.

It was during the american backed dictatorship that Iran had the most progressive govt, but its also the denial of rights to ordinary people that reversed everything Iran achieved incrementally since the world war 2. It started before the dictatorship, I mean. But it flourished (the progressivism) during the dictatorship.

sort of what'll happen if US props up Nehru like secularist for 25yrs on Indians. The reaction to it will push the entire Indian politics farther into right wing.

US replaced a socialist democratic popular govt in Iran, that was nationalizing its resources (thus denying majority share claimed by britain in those companies), to prop up Shah.
