Language identity concept confuses people...thats why we have regional identities. 

Region comes first always as it is static and it is here to stay....region names may change but the region is here to stay however languages may fade out over few centuries and gets replaced by other languages. Indian languages today were once did not even exist and they were are born out of pali and sanskrit...but this region was still here even when the predominant or majority language which you claim is not even there yet...

Because, Historically Kerela ane state and language never existed. 

It was called as Malabar...from Mangalore to trivandrum, that region is called as Malabar which was on the either side of the ghats. 

Just like deccan, these plainlands on the other side of the ghats were known as Malabar region and language spoken was Malayali...Do you get the connection now ? Why People won't address Malayalis as Keralites ? 

Its bit of history man...its never too late to dig into see what happened before 1983.
