But Why ?

I don't quite understand why when you start a successful business, you don't start multiple clones of it at the same time. Why do you wait for your competitors to clone you?

For example, in every niche, there are 5 to 10 major players. Most of them are competitors. So, each of them gets from 10% to 20% of the revenue. What if one competitor created 10 clones of their business, each managed by an independent entity. They would eventually get 50% of the revenue. One could say that it's inefficient to have 10 clones because you have to hire more people and pay a higher rent. But your competitors hire people and pay the rent too. And they still remain in business by making your slice of the pie smaller.

Especially, it's not clear why internet companies don't run thousands of clones of their product or service. It doesn't cost you more to have a thousand online stores with slightly different design, pictures and prices for the same goods.

Why Bing having a hard time competing with Google didn't create 10 clones, each with slightly different relevancy algorithm, way of presenting search results, focusing on a slightly different audience?

Why Amazon when they pioneered cloud services, didn't create 20 clones so that Google or Microsoft were just one of 22 and not one of three?
