Part of pre-poll survey, its members say

Months to go for the general elections, the political parties have begun trading charges against one another.

On Tuesday, the Jana Sena Party upped the ante by alleging that the Centre for Socio Political Analysis (SPA), an organisation backed by the TDP, was actively engaged in deletion of voters.

Nabbed

The party activists nabbed 20 members of the organisation who claimed to be conducting a survey in parts of Old Guntur and handed them over to the police.

Later, a party delegation led by State convener Nayub Kamal submitted a memorandum to Collector Kona Sasidhar.

The issue flared up late on Monday night when locals in Old Guntur complained to the JSP that some men were asking them about their voter identity cards and voting preferences.

After a few hours, they found that their names had been deleted from the voter list. When confronted by the locals, the SPA members claimed that they had been doing a pre-poll survey and were not backed by any political party.

Photographs produced

The JSP, however, produced photographs which showed some SPA members with Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.

The Collector assured the delegation that no one except the competent authority like the Electoral Revision Officer had the power of deletion.

The special summary revision of voters list ended on October 31.

Enthusiastic response

The month-long campaign to enrol voters got an enthusiastic response with more than 1.50 lakh people enrolling for the first time.

The district administration took up a drive to enrol students and enrolled 56,000 students on a single day.
