Hyderabad: Days after a video surfaced showing Madhya Pradesh state Congress president Kamal Nath asking Muslim workers of his party to ensure "90 per cent polling" in the community-dominated booths, the party has launched a shock assault on secularism. In its draft manifesto ahead of Telangana election, the Congress has made a brazen attempt at pitting Muslims against Hindus.

The draft has been accessed by Times Now. It shows that the Congress has promised seven 'Muslim-only' schemes in its manifesto to woo the community’s voters ahead of Telangana Assembly Elections 2018.

The schemes are - free electricity to mosques and churches, special opportunities in government contracts for the Muslim youth, Rs 20 lakh aid to poor Muslim students, residential schools for Muslims, hospitals for minorities, special Urdu DSC (District Selection Committee) for minorities, and punishment to firms for hiring on the basis of religion.

Notably, the People’s Front, including Congress, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS), has released its manifesto, which is the common document on which all the four parties agreed upon. However, Congress will release its own manifesto, which reportedly includes the ‘Muslim-only’ schemes.

The BJP has come down heavily on the Congress for ‘Muslim appeasement’ with Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi saying that his party led by PM Narendra Modi believes in development without discrimination and empowerment without appeasement. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia, meanwhile, said the Congress’ true character is communal and the party has never ever believed in equality.

However, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Treasurer Gudur Narayana Reddy called the manifesto as "fabricated". "There is no particular community that will be sided by any party except BJP. This draft manifesto is fabricated, we are probing who is behind this," said Reddy. Earlier today, TPCC spokesperson Shujath Ali had rejected the BJP’s charge, saying his party does not even believe in appeasement. He had further accused the BJP of making an attempt to malign the image of the Congress.

“We do not believe in appeasement. Dr Manmohan Singh had said that we cannot say that an area has developed unless the development reaches the minorities. Now, the BJP has translated minorities to Muslims, and then went on saying that Congress only works for Muslims. Tell me something, can any party win the election by displeasing the Hindus who share a majority population in the country?”

Former Telangana Minorities Commission chairman Abid Rasool Khan, who resigned from Congress earlier this month, described the draft manifesto as “unfortunate move”. The Congress is only appeasing Muslims and does not want to work for their upliftment, said Khan.
