Shankar and Rajamouli depend mainly on the 'adrenaline-rush' factor....their films are mere fantasies 

Maniratnam lost his charm in the recent times....His recent films like Yuva, Guru are examples....I didn't watch Raavan....So i cannot comment on that  sorry2

Mani Ratnam movies as well as RGV movies are too technically complicated.. and one needs to take beyond the average perception levels to understand it.

Shankar on the other hand.. plays to the galleries.. can balance the commercial and the message orientedness perfectly.. and scomes with a winner..

In other words.. something like James Cameron vs Christpher Nolan (am equating shankar vs. Maniratnam)
