Why was Vizag called Waltair in the olden days?

Waltair, is the colonial British name of Vishakapatnam. To be specific it was the name of the first railway station instituted as a Military Station in 1883. Another station at East Coast Railway was formed in 1893 - ten years later. A short 5-bogie train used to connect to the two stations. It was called 'the duplicate train' for it connected the two stations. Visakhapatnam later became a district in the Madras Presidency of British India

Waltair is an English adaptation of the Telugu name Paala Theru which was a village near the present Waltair railway station. Paala Theru means ‘a chariot of milk’. Chariots are used for carrying local deities in a procession once in a year during the annual celebrations. This village must have been famous for such one celebration locally and that’s why it got its name from the event. The reference to milk in the place name is still a mystery and cannot be explained unless we know fully the customs amd traditions of the local chariot festival which is no more celebrated there.

According to a historian based in Visakhapatnam, Mr Edward Paul, ‘Waltair’ is not an English name but was derived out of the Telugu local dialect, meaning a sloped stream. ‘Valu + eru’ = ‘Valtheru’ in Telugu, which was pronounced as ‘Waltair’ in English. A member of INTACH, Mr. Paul has spent a lifetime collecting information and trivia regarding Vizag. He generally searches and invariably finds evidences before making any statement.

Waltair was the name of one of the British generals who was stationed in vizag. Visakhapatnam is the actual name of the city which was anglicized to vizagapatam and Ina shorter form, vizag. The area north of the city towards the sea was named as waltair after the British general. Waltair became a part of the city as the city grew in size. Currently, Waltair houses the Andhra University and a also some of the posh localities like MVP, Lawson's Bay etc. The city's railway stations too fall under its Waltair division.
